The self-guided Civil War Heritage Tour takes visitors to the Historic National Cemetery and Confederate Prison site where scores of young soldiers were incarcerated and later buried during the Civil War. Although the prison no longer stands, it is memorialized at the adjacent National Cemetery. Historic records reveal that approximately 11,500 Union soldiers died while imprisoned at the Salisbury Confederate Prison.
